1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Using conventions
Using conventions 1 - The use of fast paced shots towards the end of a trailer create a tension filled atmosphere which leaves the audience in suspense. We use a mixture of numerous shots towards the end of our trailer to create an unnerving atmosphere for our audience.
Using conventions 2- Moving into a new house. The First shot of most horror trailers is of the main characters moving into a new house. In our trailer we don't show the moving in process but use a hand held video camera to portray and mention that we have just moved in to our new house as students.
Using conventions 3- A final scare at the end of the trailer. This is common within most horror teaser trailers know a days. We use a scream and a close up eye shot at the end of our trailer to get that final scare.
Using conventions-4 -- Lack of Authority. There is no parents around meaning these two innocent girls are left alone. As the girls had just moved in as students this gives the audience the impression that something bad is going to happen to one of them.
Using conventions 5- Blonde victim Using a blonde victim is used quite a lot in horror. Most horrors use blonde victims in order to show the innocence and vulnerability of the victim.
Developing Conventions
Developing convention 1 - using a blonde as a killer as well as the victim (the victim becomes the killer) By having the killer and the victim as the same person we were able to establish that there are two sides to every story. We show our killer/victim to have two completely different personalities for example, at the beginning of our trailer she is shown to be sweet and innocent however once she releases the demon concealed in the prayer, she becomes her own killer.
Developing conventions 2-- Using technology within horror. Technology within horror films has become quite common within the 21st century, From being used in the popular 'Paranormal Activities' films to 'sinister'with the use of the old cinema reel and camera. At the beginning of our trailer we use a hand held camera and presented it as if we were making a video diary.
-
Developing conventions 3- Making the audience think which is the victim. Having both innocent girls at the beginning of the trailer, makes the audience wonder which is the victim, However with a mixture of different shots we suggest to the audience that it could possibly be the brown haired girl, but she randomly disappears which leaves the audience questioning what happened to er, but it is quite clear that the main victim is the stereotypical blonde girl.
Challenging Conventions
Challenging Conventions 1 - Using only female killers and victims. We Challenged conventions by only having female killers and victims. This made our trailer different to other horror teaser trailers as there is not many horror films that just consist of women. The reason to why we have used an all female cast is to appeal more to our audience's eye.
Challenging convention 2- Self harm. Using self-harm is unusual within horror as their is usually a killer that does the harming, but we wanted to go against conventions and have the victim harm herself of which leads to her becoming the killer.
Challenging conventions 3 - Having women killers within our teaser trailer. In most common horror films there is always a male killer meaning that males are portrayed as the most dominant and carry the most power. However in our trailer we go against conventions and have a female killer showing that we wanted to create a unique and different killer within our horror.

Challenging Conventions
Our teaser trailer develops the typical media conventions of a killer in a paranormal as its usually a woman who is possessed. We decided to add a twist and challenge the convention by using a blonde (usually stereotyped as the victim) as the character who is presented as possessed. This gave our trailer a twist and shocked our audience as we had another character who had dark hair who the audience expected to turn out to be the Killer of our trailer however when they saw it was Chloe our innocent blonde it shocked then and helped our trailer to stand out to others which followed the conventions.
Even though our blonde killer challenges the convention she is still however a victim to some degree as she has once been possessed herself.

Magazine
Our magazine uses typical horror related colours. For example we use a black background and a selection of different dark reds to symbolise the horror aspect on out magazine. We developed conventions by having a pretty blonde actress as the main iconic image but put a twist to it, we had her look not like a model but as a horror related character which she plays in the trailer. Poster
Our poster also uses typical horror colours to convey the aspect of horror. The dark shades of blacks, whites and greys helps to portray our trailer as mysterious and sinister. By following convention with our poster we were able to attract our target audience much simpler yet still make it effective and attractive to the eye. |
